Safe Sanctuary

Margaret Frazier

The disciples asked of Jesus, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?”
Jesus called a child to sit among them and answered,
“If you don’t turn your lives around and become like this little child, you will definitely not enter the kingdom of heaven.”
(Matthew 18:1-3, adapted)

The longer I work with children and youth the more convinced I am that what Jesus is saying here is more than just a rebuke of the disciples tendency to worry too much about who among them is the most favored. Young eyes see the world, their place in it, and God differently.

Where adults see the ordinary, children and youth often see the extraordinary.
Where adults see roadblocks, children see possibility.
Where adults see utter despair, youth see flickers of hope.

Jesus seems to have understood that children offer a unique glimpse into what it means to be people of faith who celebrate the present moment, look at the world with wonder, and expect God to do miraculous things.

Before Jesus concludes this conversation with the disciples, he reminds them (and us) how important it is to keep safe the little ones entrusted into our care. Safe Sanctuary is a program of the United Methodist Church that works to make "congregations safe places where children, youth, and elders may experience the abiding love of God and fellowship within the community of faith.”

Safe Sanctuary Training is mandatory for all children and youth ministry volunteers at CHUMC and must be renewed annually.
