Flint River Reflections 2
One hot summer day a bunch of the cousins went down on the Flint River to do some bass fishing. We did that a lot in the summer, and in the winter, and in the spring, and in the autumn! When the parents were not along it could be an adventure. It really got to be an adventure if one of the cousins was “hogging” all the fish.
This particular day Mary was in good form on of all things a cane pole! Of course I had claimed the best spot on the riverbank, but not a nibble came my way. Therefore being the kind cousin that I was, I slid in beside Mary. This act if infringement did not go down well. Before long all the other cousins were siding with her.
Now I am convinced to this day that Mary should have shared the hot fishing spot. So I said some things, threatened some things, and generally made the day miserable for the rest. This didn’t stop until Danny threatened to throw me in the river for moccasin food.
When you swear and take an oath be prepared for the consequence. “Never, ever, till life is no more will I fish with any of you” was the cry! Keeping my vow, there was no riverbank for me until none of the cousins would be there. It was a perfect day, not to hot and a nice breeze. The new hot spot was mine alone! Never caught a thing. Actually I never wet a hook.
Sure missed Mary, Danny, and the rest that day. Life taught me a lot that day Bass Fishing on the Flint River.
